🍟 We tested the Frites Museum in Brussels

Updated January 12, 2026 by Pierre
That weekend, we were looking for An impromptu outing with the two children. The goal: to break the routine.Something simple, indoors, not too long, and above all, suitable for two children, one of whom is 2 years old. We were heading leisurely towards the chocolate museum, just to do "whatever we usually do." And then, at the last minute, just in front, near to Manneken PisWe stumble upon a brand new museum, which opened recently: the French Fry MuseumA French fry museum. In Belgium… Well… we weren't going to pretend that didn't interest us. We'll tell you more in this article.
👉Don't forget to check out our article "What to do in Brussels with children")
What to expect?
A museum that embraces richness, culture, and nostalgia. From the moment you enter, you're immersed in a yellow ambiance that awakens you from the cold and grayness of December in Brussels. You understand that the place doesn't take itself too seriouslywhile being surprisingly well-documented. The route is divided into several zones, designed as a fun walk, without information overload — exactly what you need with children.
🧭 What we discover inside (zone by zone)
🥔 The potato, an unexpected star
Let's start with the basics: the potatoe.
Where it comes from, how it crossed continents, why it became a staple on our plates. It's visual, well-explained, and accessible even for young children. Adults will learn a lot too. Did you know that the paste originated in Peru… and that it was used to make the ancestor of antibiotics?
👉 My feelings
Small space, but very bright. Even I learned things, and my 5-year-old son asked lots of questions.
🌍 The origin of the French fry
Next up the history of the French fryIts origins, the debates (of course), and how it became a fully-fledged Belgian symbol. It's told in a lighthearted way, sometimes humorously, without ever becoming academic. Children can even ride on tractors in the museum! There's even a video game where you save the fries 😉
👉 My opinion
Fun, educational and very Belgian. You'll smile as much as you learn.
⚙️ French fry machines and appliances
A huge hit with children (and parents):
- old French fry cutters (and yes, my grandparents' are here too)
- vintage deep fryers
- professional and craft tools
We find ourselves comparing it to what we have at home, and the children love observing the objects.
👉 My comment
Great section, very practical. It speaks to everyone, even those who aren't passionate about cooking.
🚚 Food trucks, chip shops and street culture
A dedicated area for French fries in the street : chip stands, food trucks, Belgian folklore.
A bit kitschy, clearly intentional, but that's part of its charm. You even get caught up in it and have fun with the kids in the fake food trucks!
👉 My feelings
It has a Belgian feel, it feels lived-in, it feels everyday. Not pretentious, just fun.
🥫 Sauces (the real national debate)
It's impossible to talk about fries without talking about Sauces.
We discover their diversity, their almost cultural importance… and immediately reignite the family debate. Want to learn more about sauces?
👉 Reviews
Clearly one of the most fun areas. If only to reignite the mayo/Andalouse/Samurai debate. You also learn what the first sauce was and the ingredients hidden behind sauces with whimsical names.
👨👩👧👦 A truly family-friendly visit
With a 2-year-old child, I was paying close attention to that — and what a pleasant surprise:
- short course
- no stressful rules
- we can progress at our own pace
👉 My personal opinion
Perfect with children. You never feel judged, and the duration is ideal to avoid fatigue.
🍟 The finale everyone was waiting for
The visit ends with a tasting of fries.
Real Belgian fries, simple, crispy, and satisfying. Nothing more is needed. Want more?
👉 Conclusion
The tasting at the end makes all the difference. The children were delighted… and so were we.
📍 Practical information
- Or Rue de l'Étuve, directly opposite Manneken Pis
- Ideal duration 45 minutes to 1 hour
- With children Yes, even very young children
- Access : ultra central, easy to integrate into a walk
🧠 InsideBrussels Verdict
The French Fry Museum is the pleasant surprise we hadn't expected.
It's not a gigantic museum or an ultra-technological experience, but That's not what we're asking of him.
👉 It's fun
👉 It's Belgian
👉 It's perfectly kid-friendly
👉 And it's a pleasant change from the usual outings
Tested with two children aged 5 and 2, validated without stress.
And now, let's be serious for two seconds:
Mayo, Andalusian or Samurai? 🍟😄
Barely a foot in the Belgian capital, Pierre launched “InsideBrussels.be” more than 10 years ago, the idea is simple: “What to do? Where to go to eat or have a drink? “. Entrepreneur at heart, this is not his first project! Far from there. EatLocal.io; KingCard.be, Bricabrac.be … Like wine, with time the project improves!
Pierre does not hesitate to share his favorites and his best addresses of Brussels restaurants that he could recommend to you with his eyes closed.
