The weather was beautiful, so we took advantage of it. First, a short walk around the lake to get some fresh air, then off to Fox, the food market located in the former Royale Belge building, now called Mix Brussels. We settled down on the terrace, buzzer in hand, and spoiler alert: we'll be back.

A frame that hits the mark

That's probably the first thing that strikes you. The 1960s building, with its glass facade and design by Lionel Jadot, is quite impressive. Many visitors also comment on the verdant setting and the particularly well-maintained landscaping. The terrace overlooking the lake, with the forest just beyond, almost gives the impression of being in the countryside. On a sunny day, it's definitely the place to be: you can eat outside, in peace and quiet, just a stone's throw from the city.

A trip around the world in a few meters

The Fox's motto is freedom. Around ten stalls each offer their own specialty, from local street food to international flavors, with vegetarian and vegan options. You can nibble from one stall to another depending on your mood: tacos, sushi, Korean, Italian, Middle Eastern cuisine. Perfect when you can't agree on what to eat in your group. As for the quality, we found it genuinely good, although, to be honest, it varies from stall to stall. Some stalls are raving about reviews, like Roru, which is practically perfect with Google users. The spicy chicken from the Korean stall is a frequent favorite, and it's easy to see why.

The atmosphere: friendly but lively

Let's be clear, the Fox is a lively place. Several regulars note that it can get noisy quickly and that the canteen-like atmosphere isn't for everyone. If you're looking for an intimate candlelit dinner, this isn't really the place. But for a meal with friends or family in a relaxed atmosphere, it works very well. The place even sometimes transforms into a party spot with DJs and themed evenings. It's up to you to choose the time slot depending on the vibe you're looking for.

A little tip before you go

A couple of things worth knowing. The food is reasonably priced, but drinks at the bar can quickly add up, with some finding the prices a bit steep. So, be sure to check the menu before ordering. As for access, there's a paid parking lot on site, as finding a free spot on the boulevard is often a challenge. Good news for those arriving by public transport: Fox is just a stone's throw from the Herrmann-Debroux metro station.

Our verdict

  • Between the setting, the variety and the atmosphere, the Fox ticks many boxes for a food outing in Brussels.
  • It's not the perfect place, and you have to accept the food aspect and its limitations, sometimes also the hipsters who come to the countryside to have a drink on the terrace, but the concept remains successful and the terrace, in good weather, is really worth it.
  • We've already decided: we're going back, if only to try the counters we didn't have time to taste this time.
