The 3 best coffee break spots in Brussels, straight from Japan

Updated on December 14, 2025 by Pierre
In Brussels, the matcha break is no longer just a passing fad: it's becoming a true urban ritual . People choose it to slow down, to take a peaceful break between appointments, or simply to savor something truly special and well-made. In a city that's often noisy and rushed, these matcha spots offer a welcome counterpoint: soothing interiors, precise service, and carefully prepared drinks. Whether enjoyed neat, as a latte, or with a small Japanese sweet, matcha has become the elegant alternative to the coffee rush , an invitation to slow down—and to rediscover Brussels in a new light, one cup at a time 🍵💚
☕ Akko Café – An ultra-zen Japanese oasis in Brussels
Akko Café is exactly the kind of place Brussels was missing . From the moment you step inside, you're captivated by its sublime, bright, and welcoming interior , where light wood, natural light, and numerous plants create a very relaxed and cozy atmosphere . Depending on where you sit, the ambiance varies: some areas are calmer and more intimate, ideal for truly unwinding, while the space near the entrance is a bit more lively.
On the menu, everything is homemade and designed with an authentic Japanese aesthetic. Lunch is a real treat : seemingly simple and light, but actually more than enough (to the point where you might sometimes order more than you can eat with the onigiri). The salmon onigiri are absolutely delicious, and the vegetarian lunch menu , very fresh and varied, confirms the care taken with the ingredients and recipes.
The drinks are another major highlight. The matcha , offered with or without milk, is of high quality—personally, I prefer the milk-free version , which is purer on the palate, although the latte version is still very enjoyable. The sesame latte is also definitely worth trying for its originality, while coffee lovers will appreciate a perfectly balanced , creamy, and expertly crafted flat white. It's worth noting that the teas come directly from Japanese producers , which explains the higher price but guarantees an ethical and authentic matcha.
It's impossible to miss the homemade pastries : a special mention goes to the black sesame financier , a true favorite. Everything is served by a professional and welcoming team , making the experience even more enjoyable.
InsideBrussels Verdict: Akko Café is much more than just a coffee shop. It's a true little Japanese oasis in Brussels , a beautiful and soothing place where you come to slow down, eat well, and savor excellent matcha. An address we highly recommend—and one we'll gladly return to.

KAGE offers much more than just a drink: it's a true experience , almost a performance. Seated at the bar, you can watch the preparation of the drinks and cocktails, executed with remarkable precision and passion . Each glass is crafted like a small work of art, as visually stunning as it is delicious to taste. The food is very good , and the Japanese sando —those quintessential Japanese sandwiches—perfectly complement the experience, even if the drinks, and especially the matcha, clearly steal the show.
Matcha is taken very seriously here, often cited as one of the best in Brussels . The drinks are authentic, well-balanced, and elegantly presented , demonstrating a genuine respect for the product. Whether enjoyed as a latte or in more elaborate preparations, the matcha always remains precise and consistent. The sandos , served warm and generously portioned, provide a welcome salty touch and pair perfectly with the drinks.
The atmosphere is calm and focused, and the space is equally suited to wine tasting and work: several people come to settle in with their laptops , in a discreet co-working environment. KAGE's success is often reflected in a long queue at the entrance , proof of the enthusiasm for the place—a wait that should be anticipated, but is clearly worth it.
