“Throwaway – The history of a modern crisis”

A historical point of view on waste, visible part of the environmental crisis.

If you are interested in the history of our waste, go to the House of European History. From February 18, 2023 to January 14, 2024, you will have the opportunity to take a unique look at the history of our waste. The exhibition traces the major changes in the way we manage and perceive our waste. Immerse yourself in a history ranging from the industrial revolution to the excesses of today's consumer society.

“Waste is an integral part of our lives. As such, they deserve our attention, as do those who deal with them in any way – because waste is a trace of our past, present and, why not, future ways of life. But also because it is a sign that should encourage us to act for a more sustainable world. »

Christine Dupont, curator of the exhibition,

The waste does not date from yesterday…

Fragments of objects from the Bronze Age, samples of white rags used in stationery in the 19th century, electronic devices… Whether industrial or household, toxic or reusable, waste is revealing. While we tend to no longer want to think about what we have thrown away, the exhibition invites us in a striking way to sift through the detritus of our societies.

The objects and testimonies presented there allow us to take stock of the ecological impact of waste and of Europe's historical and contemporary responsibility on the subject. Not to overwhelm us, but to make us think: as individuals and societies, can we stop the endless accumulation of waste, and if so, how?

To recycle

Enriched by the expertise of Brussels professionals in the treatment, recycling and reuse of waste, the exhibition is completed by an interdisciplinary publication and by a transnational web platform Throwaway, developed in partnership with nine European museums, which offers a vast set of images, texts and videos around the subject.

The 4 themes of the “Jetter” exhibition

The exhibition explores the issue of waste in 4 sections
  • Did you say rubbish?
  • From waste to refuse (1800 – 1845)
  • Throwaway Europe (1945 – today)
  • Living with(out) rubbish

Barely a foot in the Belgian capital, Pierre launches "InsideBrussels.be", the idea is simple: "What to do? Where to go eat or have a drink?" Entrepreneur at heart, this is not his first project! Far from there. Like wine, with time the project improves! Pierre does not hesitate to share his favorites and his best addresses of Brussels restaurants that he could recommend to you with his eyes closed.
