Basic-fit sports clubs closed due to COVID… Here's how to cancel my subscription
To try and contain the coronavirus, the Belgian government has imposed strict measures. Among these is the renewed closure of gyms in Belgium. Following this announcement, consumers can no longer use their fitness memberships. Gyms have been closed since October 23, 2020. At the time of writing, gyms are not yet allowed to reopen . This is the second time in 2020 that gyms have been forced to close their doors. What about membership fees and the rights of Belgian consumers? If you have a Basic-Fit membership number, this information is for you.
Club closures… What about Freeze subscription at Basic-Fit?
It doesn't make sense to pay for a gym membership when the clubs and training sessions are inaccessible… During the first wave, as compensation for the temporary closure of clubs, Basic-Fit offered its members various options. For example, you had the option to freeze your membership. This meant they wouldn't debit your bank account while the clubs were closed.
It had worked pretty well during the first wave. To my great surprise, during the second wave of COVID, without any hesitation or qualms, the gym took my money every month via direct debit ! October, November, December… After contacting Basic-Fit through their Facebook page , even though my My Basic-Fit account said "Subscription frozen: Chosen"… the gym claims I haven't taken any action… Looking further down their Facebook page, I'm not the only one… Negative comments are pouring in from all sides. So I made the decision about my gym membership… I wasn't planning on going back at the beginning of January anyway. COVID will still be around for quite a while. In the end, running in the woods isn't so bad after all!
How do I cancel my Basic-Fit subscription?
Since gyms are closed, it's quite easy to request the cancellation of your Basic-Fit membership.
- Visit https://my.basic-fit.com/login
- Go to the subscription section
- Click Cancel my subscription.
- Keep the confirmation that will be sent to you by email.
It's as simple as that. If despite this, it does not work. You can also file a complaint against Basic Fit at Test-Achat.
What does Test-Achat think of the Basic-Fit subscription gel?
On the Test-Achat website, it is clear that many consumers have already filed complaints. It states explicitly, "Contracts that are not fulfilled due to force majeure can not only be frozen, but also terminated, with reimbursement of any payments made in error. No one can be forced to remain a Basic-Fit member (...). We have also learned that, like Basic-Fit, other fitness chains are violating consumer rights during this health crisis."
