Hello explorers! 🌍✨ During my last getaway to Brussels, although I am a Brussels resident myself, I rediscovered a place that I thought I knew: the Sainte-Catherine district. Far from the usual tourist clichés, this district perfectly combines history, old-fashioned charm and modern excitement. Between its cobbled streets, its authentic bistros and its rich heritage, Sainte-Catherine is a real Brussels gem that deserves to be highlighted.

Ready for the visit? Come on, put on your best sneakers and follow the guide! 🚶‍♂️🇧🇪🥂

History of Place Sainte-Catherine 📜

Place Sainte-Catherine, once bordered by an inland port and bustling quays, is a piece of Brussels history. The Sainte-Catherine Church, which gives its name to the square, is the main architectural vestige of this era, evoking centuries of history. This square was once the center of a bustling maritime and commercial life, making Brussels a hub of commerce in Belgium.

It is also on this square that various events take place such as the Brussels Christmas Market, Brussels Bright Festival, festival of Lights.

The area is easily accessible on foot from the Grand-Place and is well served by public transport (Saint-Catherine Metro Stop). This makes it an ideal starting point for exploring other parts of the city. Right next to Place Sainte-Catherine, you will find the charming Marolles district, famous for its flea market and antique shops. The Brussels Canal is just a few steps away, offering a leisurely stroll along the water. For art lovers, the Center Belgian de la Bande Dessinee is also nearby, highlighting the rich tradition of comics in Belgium.

Also a stone's throw from Saint Catherine's Square, there are some rather unusual places like the rest of the Brussels wall. We have an article dedicated to these places. The same goes for rue de la Cigogne. An old alley which suggests that time has stopped.
