We recently explored a restaurant that we've had on our list for months! This little gem is found in the lively Saint-Boniface neighborhood and stands out completely from its neighbors on the sidewalk. Konchu reinvents traditional Japanese cuisine with a touch of Belgian eccentricity. And we can say that the result is up to the challenge!

Prepare to be seduced by this new gem of the Brussels gastronomic scene! 🍽️✨

👨🍳Meeting with the Founders:

Raphael and Elie, the spirits behind Konchu, met in a rather unusual way at the top of Mount Fuji, while meditating. A spiritual connection took place, inspiring them to join forces in the world of entrepreneurship. In fact, their shared passion for Japanese cuisine and their desire to share it were the real driving forces behind the creation of Konchu.

????The Soul of Konchu:

At Konchu, authenticity meets innovation. The restaurant is imbued with a warm atmosphere, inspired by the canteens of our childhood, with a touch of Japanese design. The building itself, designed by Belgian Art Nouveau architect Ernest Blerot, adds a historic dimension to this modern dining experience. And let's not forget Konchu himself, our little beetle mascot, symbol of their commitment to balanced and sustainable meals.

🍴 Konchu's Kitchen:

On the menu, you will find a selection of iconic Japanese dishes, headlined by the famous “Kare Raisu” or Japanese curry. Prepared with locally grown vegetables and served with rice or udon, this comforting dish is a must-try. But don't stop there, Konchu also offers a variety of sharing dishes, from okonomiyaki to Japanese barbecue dishes, all made with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

  • Okonomiyaki Chicon – 14.00€ (Caramelized endives, crispy Ganda ham.)
  • Cauliflower Tempura – 13.00€ (Coated with sumac, marinated red onions, lacto-fermented blueberries.)
  • Lamb – Polenta Miso – 23.00€ (Lamb cooked at low temperature on the barbecue, miso polenta, demi-glace sauce.)
  • KFC Sticky – €12.00 (Konchu fried chicken, spicy and sticky grapefruit sauce.)
  • American – 19.00€ (Beef tartare, pear kimchi, watercress, smoked brioche.)
  • Sea Bass Ochazuke – €17.00 (Bass, rice, bancha hojicha tea, daikon, ginger.)

The menu changes regularly, which is why the menu in the restaurant is on a QR code and not a paper version.

Our opinion on Konchu

There were 3 of us, so we tried almost all the dishes on the menu (with the exception of asparagus, unfortunately out of stock that day, and gray shrimp), we can guarantee that itEvery bite at Konchu was an explosion of flavors. From crispy fried chicken to comforting Japanese curry, each dish is prepared with care and attention to detail.

Little extra if you are looking for a nice aperitif, consider the Sake! You will be pleasantly surprised.

As for dessert, the chocolate one was better than the mochis. But that remains our personal opinion 🙂

So we ate: starter, main course, dessert, accompanied by a beer and tea, all for around 40 euros per person. We are fully satisfied with the value for money and are already planning our next visit to test the next menu. It is also good to note that Konchu operates double service per evening and tables must be vacated by 21:00 p.m.
