Brussels maximum terrorist alert 21 November 2015

Last night, following a measure launched by OCAM (Coordination Body for Threat Analysis) the danger index has risen to 4 in the Brussels region.  The Belgian capital has therefore gone from a terrorist threat "possible and likely" to a threat "serious and imminent". The rest of the country remains at level 3. This measure can be considered exceptional and should not be taken lightly by the population. This measure had only been triggered twice in the country's history. According to the Prime Minister, the increase in the level of the threat is linked to the risk of attacks such as those which occurred in Paris, as well as to the discovery of explosives and weapons.

Consequences of threat alert level 4 in Brussels

The Prime Minister invited the population to respect the safety instructions. Brussels Minister-President Rudi Vervoort indicated that it was above all a question of giving a message of caution and vigilance to the people of Brussels. This message was also intended to reassure people, letting them know that “everything is under control”. However, this alert level 4 has consequences: cancellation of a large number of events, suppression a large number of Transportation public insurance (mainly in trams and the metro) as well as the closure of some stores in the center. The precautions to be taken are to avoid during this threat places with large populations such as shopping centers, major events, concerts, large gatherings, airports, stations, public transport. Also, the government insists not to spread rumors and to follow the official information of the authorities and police services.
